Orbit is located in the Myvatn region and functions as a community house that encourages the exchange of essential goods while facilitating social interaction. The design aims to create a space where various activities can flourish together. By integrating environmental responsibility with community needs, Orbit plays an important role in connecting locals and visitors, enhancing the cultural landscape of the area.

Community Engagement

The design prioritizes open circulation, which allows different activities to blend and interact. Inside, distinct areas support diverse functions, such as a children's space for play and learning, along with an exchange room for second-hand items. This setup encourages resource sharing and creates a sense of community among users. The layout is intended to foster engagement and activity, rather than restrict movement.

Spatial Configuration

The primary room features large, adaptable spaces suitable for various gatherings and events. Flexibility is key; the design encourages users to shift and rearrange spaces as needed. Visual connections among different areas promote fluid movement throughout the building, making it accessible for everyone. The entrance welcomes visitors and provides information about ongoing events, enhancing the building’s role as a community center.

Environmental Integration

Orbit's design reflects a strong connection to its environmental context. The roof serves both as an aesthetic feature and a functional element, allowing the building to blend naturally into its surroundings. It is equipped to efficiently collect rainwater and snowmelt for reuse, addressing local climate challenges. Large windows allow daylight to fill the interiors, creating a warm atmosphere and connecting the inside with the outdoor environment.

Material Considerations

Materials play a vital role in the overall design philosophy. Wood is primarily used due to its ability to capture carbon during its lifecycle. When it reaches the end of its use, wood can be repurposed, supporting sustainability. Orbit includes glass that is recycled, further reducing the environmental impact of the construction. The building relies on geothermal and hydroelectric systems for energy, emphasizing its commitment to efficiency and minimal ecological footprint.

The design showcases practical solutions while remaining visually appealing. The roof's slope effectively directs rainwater to be collected within the system. This careful attention to detail not only addresses environmental concerns but also reinforces the building’s purpose as a gathering place for the community.
