5 key facts about this project
The meditation cubicle in Vale de Moses, Portugal, serves as a retreat for those seeking peace and reflection. Located in the valleys of central Portugal, the design focuses on connecting users with nature while promoting healing practices. The structure is organized into three main areas: an entrance, a meditation room, and a storage space, each designed to enhance the user experience.
Spatial Organization
The layout is designed to create a smooth transition from the outside to a tranquil interior. The entrance serves as a place for users to leave their belongings and prepare mentally for meditation. The meditation room is spacious enough to support different activities, such as yoga or massage. A large window allows views of the valley, creating a direct relationship between the interior space and the surrounding landscape.
Materiality
Cross-laminated timber is the primary material used for the structure. This choice is based on its strength and easy construction. The exterior walls and flooring feature cross-laminated timber plates, with insulating layers in between to help maintain a comfortable interior climate. This material choice contributes to a warm environment that suits the purpose of meditation. The green roof includes photovoltaic panels, demonstrating a focus on sustainable practices.
Utility and Functionality
Inside, a small utility area contains various practical features, including a sink and storage for tools used in therapy sessions. This arrangement meets the functional needs of users without disrupting the calm atmosphere intended for meditation. The storage area also accommodates the battery for the photovoltaic system, supporting efficient operation.
Elevated Structure
The design is raised on stilts, adapting to the slope of the terrain. This elevation protects the natural landscape and allows for views that enrich the user experience. The structure's height gives users a unique perspective of their surroundings, enhancing the sense of calm and connection to nature.
A large window in the meditation room frames the picturesque view of the valley, inviting elements of the outside into the space while allowing for soft, diffused light to enter the room.
