The House of Here is a visitor lodge located in the Arabian Oryx Protected Area in Abu Dhabi. It focuses on sustainable design and aims to protect local biodiversity while helping visitors appreciate the Arabian Oryx. The design is inspired by Bedouin culture and the surrounding desert landscape. It uses a modular approach that allows the structure to be easily assembled and disassembled, reducing ecological impact.
Design Concept
The architecture features a modular system consisting of three main components. The inner structure expands and is inspired by the horns of the Arabian Oryx. This creates a visual link to local wildlife and enhances the stability of the lodge. The structure sits on a large base deck that provides support, while a sustainable fabric membrane covers it. This membrane protects against the weather and allows natural light to enter.
Spatial Organization
A wrap-around deck allows visitors to enjoy wide views of the environment, strengthening their connection to nature. Inside, the layout is designed for various visitor needs. The VIP lodge has a washroom that is divided into two areas, which prioritizes privacy and function, using sliding doors for separation. The circular mattress in the sleeping quarters offers flexibility for both group and individual use.
Cultural Context
The communal lodge promotes social interaction. It features a lounge and dining area inspired by traditional Arabic Majlis seating. This design choice enriches the visitor experience and fosters a sense of community. By reflecting cultural elements, the lodge not only provides comfort but also creates shared moments among guests in the unique desert setting.
Materiality
Materials chosen for the lodge include mangrove wood for the structural frames and date palm for larger spans. These selections support local sourcing and emphasize sustainability. The PTFE coated fabric membrane mimics the look of woven date palm fronds. It is practical and durable while maintaining a connection to local styles and traditions.
