The FOUNDE project represents a thoughtful response to the growing demand for sustainable housing in Vermont. This architectural design serves as an off-grid dwelling that prioritizes energy efficiency, natural resource management, and social engagement. It embodies the principles of modern architecture while emphasizing environmental stewardship and community integration.

The building's compact single-story form employs a unique angular roofline that directs rainwater for harvesting, effectively managing snow loads and enhancing the structure's overall efficiency. The internal spatial arrangement fosters interaction, featuring an open-concept living area that integrates the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. A versatile bedroom with a wall bed accommodates various living arrangements, supporting both small families and communal living. Outdoor spaces, including a covered entry and terrace, expand the living area into the natural landscape, encouraging residents to connect with their surroundings.

Sustainable materiality is a significant focus of the FOUNDE project. The use of Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) greatly enhances energy performance while creating a solid framework. Recycled aggregate concrete features prominently in the foundation, contributing to resource efficiency. Insulation is further optimized with Kingspan GreenGuard XPS, ensuring low-energy consumption throughout the year. Natural wood siding serves as protective cladding and adds warmth to the architectural expression. Incorporating solar panels underscores the project's commitment to renewable energy.

The FOUNDE project distinguishes itself through its commitment to community and environmental considerations. It is designed as a car-free community that prioritizes pedestrian mobility, thereby reducing carbon emissions associated with transportation. This project does not merely offer housing; it fosters a sense of belonging and shared responsibility among residents. The modular design allows for quick assembly and adaptability, making it a practical response to the local housing crisis.

Integration with the landscape is another unique aspect of the design. The building is systematically positioned to maximize natural light and ventilation while enhancing the surrounding ecosystem with native plantings. This connection to the environment not only enriches the living experience but also promotes biodiversity.

The FOUNDE project is an exemplar of modern architecture that successfully balances functionality with ecological responsibility. Its design outcomes address critical housing needs while fostering community interaction and environmental consciousness. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
