Sustainable Design Featuring Mosaic Tiles and Aluminum Sun Breakers in a Contemporary Residential Setting

Project in-detail

Incorporating porcelain tiles and aluminum sun breakers, the residence exemplifies contemporary design with an emphasis on sustainable living, offering flexible spaces for modern family interactions.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes extensive aluminum sun breakers to enhance natural light control while minimizing heat gain.
02
Incorporates porcelain tiles for high durability and ease of maintenance throughout living spaces.
03
Features a versatile open plan that efficiently connects communal and private areas for modern living.
04
Integrates landscaped outdoor seating that complements the interior spaces and promotes interaction.
05
Designed with energy-efficient systems that support sustainable residential living.

The project is a contemporary two-story residential design that prioritizes an open floor plan and seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Located in an urban setting, this architectural endeavor reflects modern living standards while emphasizing flexibility and functionality. The layout supports communal interaction as well as private areas, striking a balance between social and individual needs.

The architectural design incorporates various amenities, including a ground floor featuring a living room, dining area, and kitchen, all designed to promote a fluid connection between spaces. An outdoor seating area, complemented by landscaped gardens, enhances recreational opportunities. Additional functional spaces include a maid room and a store, which facilitate the daily operations of the household. The first floor consists of multiple bedrooms, each with accompanying bathrooms, ensuring privacy for the residents.

Materiality in this project plays a critical role in defining its character. Key materials include polished porcelain tiles for the living areas, non-slip tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms, and mosaics for the pool area. Concrete tiles provide durable surfaces for outdoor pathways, ensuring longevity. Epoxy paint finishes contribute to a contemporary aesthetic, while aluminum sun breakers serve both functional and design purposes, allowing for controlled natural light.

Focus on Sustainability A distinctive feature of this project is its commitment to sustainability. The architectural design incorporates elements such as solar panels, reflecting a modern approach to energy efficiency. The extensive use of large windows not only enhances natural light but also promotes a relationship between the interior space and the surrounding environment. This thoughtful integration allows for ambient lighting and the benefit of views into landscaped areas.

Attention to Detail The project excels in its attention to detail. A well-defined circulation path connects all areas without detracting from the overall spatial layout. The lobby serves as a central hub, enhancing movement throughout the residence. The careful selection of materials creates a cohesive aesthetic that resonates with contemporary trends while ensuring practicality.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
