Sustainable Columbarium Surrounded by Greenery and Wildflowers

Project in-detail

Nestled among wildflowers and designed as a contemplative labyrinth, the columbarium showcases a seamless integration of local stone and concrete, offering a peaceful memorial space that encourages personal reflection and remembrance.
5 key facts about this project
01
Columbarium walls are topped with wildflowers, enhancing visual appeal and promoting local biodiversity.
02
The design incorporates broad steps that encourage movement and accessibility without barriers.
03
Rainwater is collected and stored in an underground cistern for irrigation, supporting sustainability.
04
Paths within the memorial create a labyrinthine experience that invites exploration and contemplation.
05
Strategically placed trees provide natural shading and maintain a connection with the surrounding forest.

The Garden of the Collared Dove is located at the Forest Cemetery of Riga. This space is designed for remembrance, merging natural landscape with architectural features. The design focuses on creating an environment that encourages reflection and personal contemplation. Accessibility is a key element, allowing visitors to move freely through the space and engage with the memorial in an intimate way.

Conceptual Design

The layout promotes openness, with broad steps on three sides that create a welcoming precinct. There are no walls or gates, which enhances the sense of accessibility. This design invites visitors to wander and explore, fostering a meaningful connection between the act of remembrance and the experience of movement throughout the space.

Natural Elements Integration

Natural aspects play an important role in the design. The tops of the columbarium walls feature wildflowers and daisies, enhancing the visual appeal while connecting the structure to the surrounding environment. This relationship with nature encourages visitors to reflect on the impact of life and memory. The integration of greenery not only beautifies the space but also invites a sense of calm and peace.

Elevation and Transcendence

The design emphasizes elevation, with pathways that invite movement both up and down. This change in height adds depth to the visitor experience, encouraging thoughts about life and mortality. As people navigate the path, they gain different views of the surroundings, enhancing the sense of connection to the space. Visitors are encouraged to engage both physically and emotionally, deepening their individual experiences within the site.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a core principle of the design. It works with existing environmental features rather than against them. Local stone and concrete are used, providing durability while maintaining ties to the area. Rainwater is collected and directed to an underground cistern for irrigation, showing a commitment to ecological care. This approach not only supports the gardens but also respects the environment, which aligns with the purpose of the memorial.

The water features in the design create gentle movements that invite contemplation, enhancing the overall atmosphere of tranquility and reflection within the memorial space.
