Suspended Steel Micro Units Beneath Urban Bridges

Project in-detail

Suspended from steel bridges, micro units offer adaptive living spaces that blend urban infrastructure with natural views, redefining how people can inhabit underutilized urban areas.
5 key facts about this project
01
Micro units are directly suspended from existing steel bridges, utilizing the structure for stability.
02
Access pathways connect ground level to the living spaces, promoting community interaction.
03
Each unit is designed for self-sufficiency, minimizing reliance on traditional infrastructure.
04
The project transforms underutilized urban spaces into functional residential areas.
05
Focus on maximizing views enhances the relationship between residents and their environment.

Under the Bridge reinterprets urban living by integrating micro units into existing steel bridge structures, turning often overlooked parts of the city into practical homes. Positioned within underused bridges across North America, the design emphasizes adaptability and a response to current housing needs. It takes advantage of existing infrastructure to promote a thoughtful approach to urban development.

Conceptual Framework

The idea behind the design is to use infrastructure that is usually meant for transportation as spaces for living. This shift challenges the typical practice of expanding into new land, instead focusing on repurposing what is already available in the urban landscape. By placing micro units within the bridge, the design creates a blend of urban life with nature, providing a unique place for people to call home.

Structural Composition

Micro units are suspended from the steel framework of the bridge, using the strong material for support and stability. This method enhances the views residents enjoy while also introducing a lighter look compared to traditional heavy buildings. Residents can access these units through pathways that connect ground-level entries to the spaces below, fostering a sense of community.

Sustainability and Adaptability

A key feature of the design is the self-sufficiency of the micro units. Each unit depends on the bridge's structure for support, reducing the need for extensive groundwork and lowering the environmental footprint. The design allows for reconfiguration in the future, making it responsive to changing needs in urban living. This flexibility is important in today's context, as it supports housing solutions that can grow and change.

Design Details

Inside the micro units, the layout is carefully thought out to maximize light and space. Large windows provide natural light and a clear view of the landscape, encouraging a connection between residents and their environment. This attention to light and space highlights a commitment to integrating living spaces with the natural world around them.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
