VOLKOFFEE coffee-stations integrates with the volcanic landscape of Iceland, offering a thoughtful approach to sustainable coffee production. Situated near significant volcanic features, the design combines minimal environmental impact with an emphasis on visitor experience. It blends natural beauty with practical functionality, creating spaces that foster connection to both the coffee being served and the surrounding environment.

Tectonic Landscape

The project features a tectonic landscape that resembles a land-art garden while incorporating necessary amenities such as parking and areas for arrival. Landscaped zones provide spaces for visitors to relax and reflect, contributing to both beauty and ecological management. These gardens also play a crucial role in reducing risks like landslides by effectively handling rainwater, showing how design can be both attractive and environmentally responsible.

Visitor Routes

Routes throughout the coffee stations symbolize global connections and movement. Designed as ramps, they connect visitors with existing trekking paths, making the site accessible to everyone. This layout encourages exploration of the volcanic terrain, enhancing the overall experience as people move freely between spaces, engaging with the environment.

Experiential Program

Inside, a suspended coffee break area invites visitors to enjoy expansive views of the landscape. The building layout includes egg-shaped units that serve various purposes, allowing for private conversations and a closer look at the coffee-making process. Each unit supports a journey from raw beans to brewed cups, allowing visitors to understand and appreciate the work that goes into coffee production.

Sustainable Energy Systems

Sustainability is central to the design, observed in the water harvesting system placed below the tectonic gardens. This system captures rain and melting snow for use in coffee preparation. Additionally, the energy strategy combines traditional grid access with an off-grid geothermal system. Together, these aspects highlight a commitment to using resources wisely and minimizing the environmental impact of operations.

The design engages visitors with its natural surroundings while providing a clear understanding of the coffee journey. The blend of practical spaces with environmental awareness creates a functional and appealing environment where coffee culture can thrive against the backdrop of Iceland's rugged beauty.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
