Located 250 meters from the nearest community for optimal seclusion.

The Silent Meditation Forest Cabins is a unique space designed for meditation in a forest environment. Located about 250 meters from the nearest community, the cabins encourage visitors to connect deeply with nature. The overall design seeks to create a calming atmosphere that supports mindfulness and quiet reflection. The architecture integrates well with the landscape, adding to the experience of seclusion and peace.

Design Concept

At the core of the design is a 360-degree triple-glazed envelope that provides a barrier while allowing light and views of the surroundings. This setup enhances the connection between the inside and outside, letting users fully engage with the natural landscape. The structure features a suspended net, elevating users during meditation. This element not only offers comfort but also strengthens the interaction with the forest environment.

Heating and Cooling Systems

The cabin includes a small portable propane heater, selected for its effectiveness in smaller spaces. To maintain a pleasant indoor climate, the design incorporates passive cooling through a strategically placed back window and a roof glass hatch. These features promote airflow, ensuring occupants are comfortable in various weather conditions while taking advantage of natural elements.

Energy Generation

An interesting part of the design is its human-powered energy generation system. Users can generate electricity by pedaling on fixed pedals, allowing them to take part in creating their own energy. This energy is stored in standard car batteries and is made available for low-wattage devices through an AC/DC inverter. This approach encourages sustainability, enabling users to rely on their own physical efforts to meet energy needs.

Material Selection

The materials chosen for the project emphasize sustainability and connection with the environment. Oak wood forms the structural components, while pine wood is used for various cladding and interior finishes, providing warmth and a natural feel. Concrete footings add stability and durability to the structure. To enhance thermal performance, marine plywood and insulated panels are utilized in the walls. Aluminum window frames offer a modern look while ensuring strength. The inclusion of linen fabric for the suspended net contributes a soft touch that aligns well with the overall aesthetic.

The Silent Meditation Forest Cabins illustrate a thoughtful approach to design that prioritizes a connection to nature. The careful selection of materials and systems enhances the experience of users, inviting them to engage fully with their surroundings.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
