The project presents a thoughtful exploration of life and death through a memorial monument situated in Riga, Latvia. The design serves as a community space for remembrance and reflection, blending individual experiences with a wider cultural narrative. By viewing death as part of the continuum of life, the architect offers an environment for visitors to connect with their memories.

Conceptual Framework

The design is built around a framework that links life and death. These two states are seen as interconnected rather than opposing forces. Inspired by the art of M.C. Escher, the monument emphasizes the importance of individual memories. Each memory contributes to a larger human experience, inviting visitors to reflect on their personal stories within a universal context.

Architectural Form

The monument takes the shape of a tower, which encourages vertical movement through its various levels. Each floor offers spaces designed for contemplation and connection with both nature and the surrounding city. This design establishes a relationship with notable landmarks in Riga, such as the National Library of Latvia and the Riga Radio and TV Tower, situating the monument within the city's historical framework.

Interaction with Light

Light plays a significant role in the design. Each columbarium features mirrors that reflect sunlight at specific times of the year. This creates unique moments of reflection for each memorial. By incorporating sunlight, the design highlights the passage of time and strengthens the emotional connection between visitors and their memories, serving as a reminder of life’s continuity.

Integration with Nature

The landscaping around the monument enhances its connection to the natural environment. Light and reflections interact with the surrounding greenery, fostering a calm atmosphere that encourages contemplation. This integration promotes tranquility, allowing visitors to engage with their memories in a peaceful setting.

Every detail invites visitors to connect with their loved ones in a deeply personal manner, balancing lightness and presence within a meaningful memorial space.
