Sun-Shielded Observation Platform Enhanced With Paper-Composite Panels

Project in-detail

With its self-shading sun protection and unique paper-composite panels, the platform provides a comfortable and visually engaging space for wildlife observation in a sensitive ecological setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
The platform's sun protection incorporates a unique perforated design for optimal airflow.
02
Real wood surfaces contribute to cooling while enhancing aesthetic appeal.
03
Multiple viewing points are strategically placed for dynamic wildlife engagement.
04
The lower podium features safe observation areas specifically designed for children.
05
The structure serves as a noise buffer, protecting nearby natural habitats from disturbance.

The flamingo observation platform in Abu Dhabi is designed as a three-dimensional promenade that extends from a boardwalk to an observation hill. Located in an area rich with wildlife, the platform aims to provide visitors with an immersive experience while prioritizing the protection of the local ecosystem. The design emphasizes accessibility and user engagement, allowing people to appreciate the natural habitat without causing disruptions.

Structural Design

The platform consists of various zones that accommodate different visitor activities. The main podium offers wide views of the surroundings, while the lower podium is set up for families and larger groups. Elevation changes throughout the design enhance the visual experience and encourage a greater connection with the environment. Visitors can easily navigate through these areas, fostering exploration.

Climate Response

The platform effectively responds to Abu Dhabi's climate by incorporating features that provide shade. Its shape protects visitors from direct sunlight and promotes airflow, creating a comfortable environment even in hot weather. These design elements help regulate the temperature of the space, making it more pleasant for visitors throughout the day.

Materials and Aesthetics

Materials selected for the construction include real wood, which is chosen for its warmth and visual connection to the landscape. Grey wood boards line the walking paths, offering durability while ensuring comfort beneath the feet of visitors. Paper-composite panels part of the sun-protecting shield contribute to both structural stability and visual interest with their unique patterns.

Visitor Experience

The interaction with surrounding wildlife plays an important role in the platform's design. The back side acts as a noise barrier, reducing disturbances to nearby habitats. Various viewing points offer visitors the chance to engage with the natural setting from multiple angles. This variety enriches the visitor experience, allowing for deeper appreciation of the local fauna.

The detail in the sun-protecting shield, with its perforated design, not only adds visual complexity but also improves airflow. This thoughtful feature helps ensure that people remain comfortable while observing the flamingos in their natural habitat.
