The Pavilhão da Vela is located on Portugal's west coast, surrounded by rolling hills and lush vineyards. It serves multiple purposes, catering to local wine-related activities while providing a space for visitors to relax and connect with nature. The design emphasizes a balance with its environment, focusing on functionality, simplicity, and a strong relationship between inside and outside.

Spatial Organization

The layout features a straightforward geometric shape that integrates well into the landscape. Large windows on the south and west sides allow for expansive views of the vineyards, creating a seamless connection with the outdoors. This design choice invites natural light inside while framing the scenic beauty, enhancing the experience for those within the pavilion.

Mass and Form

The pavilion is divided into two distinct sections that are intentionally shifted from each other. This creates a sheltered area at the entrance, welcoming visitors with protection from the elements. A stepped terrace, designed like a tribune facing the grapevines, reinforces the bond between the pavilion and its surroundings. This design encourages interaction, making it easy for guests to engage with one another and the landscape.

Materials and Construction

Materials play a significant role in the overall design. The facade features a mix of opaque, translucent, and transparent glass. This blend creates an interesting effect, allowing light to filter in while maintaining some privacy. The frame is built from steel using prefabricated elements, which allows for efficient assembly and sturdy construction. These choices reflect a focus on both aesthetics and practicality, keeping a lightweight appearance that complements the natural setting.

The pergola roof adds a unique touch with its sun sails. These sails bring a sense of lightness to the structure. They move gently in the breeze, resembling clouds or waves. Their adjustable feature allows for optimal shading, providing comfort to visitors while responding to changing sunlight conditions. This detail enhances the overall experience, making the pavilion a pleasant place to enjoy the landscape and its surroundings.
