The Surya project is a meditation space located within the natural landscape of the New Zealand bush. It focuses on the connection between people and the energy of the sun. The design emphasizes creating a peaceful environment for reflection and relaxation. By framing the architectural experience around the journey of the sun from sunrise to sunset, it aims to enhance visitors' well-being through their engagement with nature.

Central Feature

A flower altar is positioned at the core of the space, acting as an important gathering point for visitors. This altar represents the idea of receiving energy through sunlight, inviting individuals to contemplate their relationship with the natural world. The layout surrounding the altar is designed to facilitate easy movement, encouraging interaction with both the indoor areas and the outdoors. This thoughtful arrangement fosters a sense of community and shared experience among visitors.

Natural Light Integration

Natural light plays a crucial role in the design, with well-placed openings that allow sunlight to fill the meditation area. The presence of daylight enhances the atmosphere and helps create a warm and inviting space. This focus on sunlight ties into the overall concept, aligning visitors’ experiences with the changing light throughout the day. This connection promotes moments of quiet reflection, encouraging individuals to engage more deeply with their surroundings.

Materiality and Context

Using wood as the primary material reflects a commitment to sustainability. The choice of wood enhances the local environment and evokes a sense of comfort and warmth. This material integrates well with the surrounding landscape, maintaining the natural beauty of the site. The design prioritizes harmony with nature, ensuring that the structure complements its setting and serves its purpose effectively.

The careful consideration of light, space, and natural elements results in features that enrich the meditation experience. Visitors can look through the large windows of the meditation cabin, feeling connected to both the sky and the verdant landscape outside. This integration emphasizes the project’s goal of fostering spiritual recharging through the sun, establishing Surya as a peaceful retreat immersed in nature.
