The Lake Myvatn Visitor Center is located in Iceland's volcanic landscape and offers views of Myvatn lake, Hverfjall volcano, and the Dimmuborgir lava field. Serving as an educational hub for tourists, the center focuses on the unique geological features of the region. The design aims for a strong connection between the architecture and the natural surroundings.

Architectural Form

The project features forms that echo the shapes found in the local landscape. A central spiral ramp serves as a key element, guiding visitors smoothly through the center. This ramp encourages exploration, allowing people to move between various interconnected spaces that create a sense of discovery as they ascend to different levels.

Exterior Access and Interaction

The entrance is located below ground level, which creates a unique experience for visitors. This design mimics the feeling of entering a cave, deepening the relationship between the building and its environment. The layout prioritizes outdoor connections, encouraging visitors to engage with the beautiful landscape that surrounds the center.

Visitor Amenities

The center includes various functional spaces to accommodate different types of visitors. A central area features a terrace and a playground, designed for comfort and safety. Additionally, the presence of facilities for campers, such as showers and restrooms, adds to the convenience and usability of the space. These amenities enhance the overall visitor experience while focusing on the area's geological significance.

Materials and Sustainability

The construction utilizes concrete and steel, ensuring durability and longevity. This choice of materials supports sustainable practices while allowing the building to endure various weather conditions. By placing the visitor center partly below ground, unobstructed views of the stunning landscape are preserved. Transparent sections of the building invite natural light inside and connect the interior spaces with the outside environment.

Together, these elements create a structure that harmonizes with its surroundings. It highlights the geological heritage of the region while providing an informative and comfortable experience for all visitors.
