VoCo Coffee Shop at Hverfjall Volcano integrates with its striking natural surroundings. Located on the slopes of Hverfjall, the coffee shop and visitor center enhance the experience for those exploring the volcano. The design connects visitors to the unique geological features of the region and encourages exploration of the landscape.

Architectural Form and Experience

The building's form draws inspiration from the existing hiking path that traverses Hverfjall. This relationship creates a natural extension of the landscape, guiding visitors toward the site. When approaching the structure, visitors encounter a shell-like information center, designed to be inviting and functional. This initial form establishes the groundwork for a series of engaging experiences that unfold as visitors make their way through the space.

Transitioning Internally

After entering, guests move along a ramp leading to the underground section that houses the coffee shop. This descent offers a different experience, contrasting with the openness of the surrounding nature. The shift from an exposed exterior to an enclosed interior deepens the sense of discovery. This spatial change encourages visitors to reconsider their place in relation to the landscape, exploring both the architecture and its natural context.

Connecting History and Landscape

VoCo highlights the historical and geological significance of Hverfjall Volcano, providing an educational element to the visitors’ journey. The underground floor includes glazing that allows visibility of the geological layers below, making geological history accessible while also inviting natural light. This feature not only offers an informative perspective but also keeps a connection between the interior and the outdoor landscape.

Pathways and Visitor Interaction

The design incorporates two distinct pathways for visitors. One path leads toward the hiking trail, promoting outdoor activity, while the other continues to the exhibit center within the building. This arrangement supports a variety of visitor experiences, combining recreation with learning opportunities. The design enhances engagement with the impressive volcanic landscape, offering meaningful interactions.

The culmination of the experience is a detailed architectural feature—a panoramic view that links the coffee shop to the breathtaking scenery outside. Visitors can enjoy their drinks while taking in the natural beauty of Hverfjall, creating a memorable connection between the interior space and the landscape that surrounds it.
