Quinta Do Monte D'Oiro is a family wine project located in the Lisbon Wine Region of Portugal. The wine tasting room is designed to reflect the close relationship between the architecture and the surrounding landscape. Visitors can engage with the wine-making process in a setting that connects them to the region's agricultural history. The overall design concept focuses on blending the indoor space with the outdoors, providing a harmonious environment that enhances the experience of wine tasting.

Structure and Form

The building is supported by two main columns that resemble trees, symbolizing a connection to nature. The roof stretches outward, creating views of the vineyards that surround the structure. This form not only serves to support the building but also invites visitors to experience the landscape fully. The architecture allows the outside environment to play a role in the internal ambiance, creating a cohesive relationship between the structure and its setting.

Spatial Arrangement

Inside the tasting room, the arrangement is centered around an oval table that encourages visitor interaction. This design emphasizes community and engagement, inviting guests to take part in the wine-making experience together. The flow of the space guides visitors from the winery to the barrel room, leading to areas designed for socializing and appreciation of the wine produced on the site.

Natural Light and Ventilation

The design makes effective use of natural light and ventilation. Large sliding doors open on two sides, allowing air to move freely throughout the space. This setup creates a connection between the interior and the outdoors. The ceiling structure features open views of the vineyard, immersing visitors in the landscape while also providing comfort.

Sustainability and Materiality

Sustainability is a key consideration in the building's design. Solar panels on the roof ensure that the tasting room can meet its energy needs independently. The materials chosen for construction, such as Portuguese tiles and phenolic plywood, provide not only visual appeal but also a strong link to the local environment. Stone walls enclosing the tasting room add to its overall strength and create a rich atmosphere for visitors.

The incorporation of illuminated wine bottles into the design acts as a focal point, celebrating the wine made at the Quinta and enhancing the overall visual experience. This element contributes to the unique charm of the space while serving a functional role in the tasting process.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
