The Lily Pad is an engaging architectural design located in Cambodia that combines modern principles with cultural elements. It serves as a vacation retreat, allowing visitors to connect with the local environment while enjoying a compact living space. The design focuses on harmony with nature by utilizing renewable energy sources, including solar and hydro-power, to create a comfortable retreat.

Cultural Influences

Influences from traditional Cambodian architecture are evident in the design. The upper section resembles modern Buddhist temples, featuring clean lines and an elevated profile that draws the eye. In contrast, the lower part uses stone elements common in Khmer-style buildings. These features help the structure relate to its cultural context and provide visitors with a deeper appreciation for local traditions.

Structural Configuration

The building consists of three distinct levels, each designated for different functions. The ground level functions as a meditation room designed to maximize space through a vertical approach. Its circular layout offers a feeling of openness, which enhances the experience for inhabitants. An outdoor patio is situated on the second level, promoting a close relationship between the indoors and outdoors. At the top level, a minimalist design provides space for sleeping and bathing while ensuring comfort.

Sustainability Features

The focus on sustainability is a key element of the design. The perimeter features a lily-pad rim that creates a hydro-power filtration system. This design produces a waterfall effect, which serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. It powers the home while adding a calming sound for meditation. Tinted solar glass allows natural light to enter while shielding occupants from harsh sunlight. The roof includes a traditional solar panel, supporting the home’s energy needs.

Innovative Design Solutions

The design incorporates tropical architecture principles, which emphasize the connection between indoor and outdoor areas. Instead of conventional stairs, retractable ladders provide access between levels, allowing for uninterrupted views of the surroundings. The outdoor patio includes a protective net or curtain system that enhances the environment, promoting tranquility and a connection to nature.

The combination of cultural references, sustainable design, and thoughtful spatial configurations creates a retreat that integrates well with its surroundings. It encourages users to enjoy both comfort and a deep connection with the natural world.
