The Quinta do Monte d'Orio wine tasting room is located in Portugal, positioned on the edge of a hill that overlooks a picturesque vineyard. It is designed to provide an inviting space for wine tasting, blending modern styles like Minimalism with a sense of local tradition. The design aims to connect visitors with the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of harmony between the building and nature.

Design Concept and Spatial Arrangement

Openness and accessibility are key features of the wine tasting room. The interior layout centers on a long communal table, encouraging guests to interact and enjoy their wine together. Surrounding benches offer extra seating, which allows for different arrangements and enhances the social aspect of the experience. This thoughtful design invites a friendly atmosphere, important for enjoying local wines.

Materiality and Aesthetic

The project highlights specific materials that enhance its character. Steel shutters are a prominent feature of the façade, allowing the tasting room to open fully to the outside when desired. This practical element provides visitors with sweeping views of the vineyard while also promoting airflow throughout the space. Roughly plastered red walls add to the overall look and feel, connecting the room to the region’s wine culture and history.

Integration with Landscape

The placement of the tasting room is intentional, using the high location to forge a visual connection with the vineyard below. Stairs are integrated into the design, leading directly from the tasting room to the fields of grapevines. By allowing guests to step outside and engage closely with the plants, the design highlights the natural relationship between the building and its surroundings, emphasizing the importance of context in the overall experience.

The project culminates in a southwest-facing terrace that provides stunning views of the sunset over the vineyard, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy both the landscape and the wine. This detail enriches the visitor experience, grounding the tasting room in its environment while celebrating local culture.
