The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower, created by LYX Arkitekter, is an architectural feature that blends well with the unique environment of Abu Dhabi’s flamingo habitat. Designed as a viewing platform, it allows visitors to appreciate the surrounding natural landscape while emphasizing both accessibility and sustainability. The design reflects a modern approach, which harmonizes with the ecological context, creating a dialogue between human experience and nature.

Observation Area

An observation area of 100 square meters serves as the centerpiece of the tower. This large space offers broad views of the landscape, encouraging visitors to engage with the environment fully. The layout is deliberately planned to make the experience enjoyable and immersive, allowing individuals to appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.

Accessibility Features

A key aspect of the design is the 2-meter-wide ramp that provides the main route for navigating through the tower. This ramp enhances movement, making it easier for all visitors to access the viewing area. Additionally, the 1.2-meter railing height prioritizes safety and comfort while maintaining an inviting feel, encouraging people to explore the space without worry.

Structural Innovation

The structure relies on steel columns to support solar panels, integrating sustainable energy solutions into its design. This choice not only provides necessary energy for the tower but also reduces its impact on the environment. Triangle panels are used throughout, offering both stability and a pleasing appearance, emphasizing a balance between strength and aesthetic value.

Construction Details

The careful assembly of the tower is evident in the specific panel connections and wood arms employed in its design. The main form is built at the wood layer, highlighting a focus on craftsmanship and quality in construction. This detail fosters a connection between the visitors and the structure, enhancing the overall experience of being in a natural setting.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
