Spiraling Steel Columns with Perforated Metal Screen Overlooking Wetland Biodiversity

Project in-detail

The observation tower, supported by spiraling steel columns and wrapped in a perforated metal screen, provides a unique vantage point for visitors to engage with the diverse ecosystems of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
5 key facts about this project
01
The boardwalk utilizes diamond pier foundations to minimize environmental impact.
02
The observation tower features a spiraling ramp for inclusive accessibility.
03
Perforated metal screens create dynamic patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.
04
Shaded arbours along the pathway encourage visitor engagement with local biodiversity.
05
Steel columns within the tower reference the balance of flamingos, connecting structure and nature.

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi is undergoing a significant change with the addition of a new boardwalk and observation tower. The aim is to enhance the visitor experience while promoting education about the rich ecosystems present in this area. The design focuses on making the reserve accessible for everyone, allowing people to explore the natural environment and learn about the local wildlife.

Design Concept

The design includes a wide timber boardwalk that directs visitors through the wetland and toward the observation tower. This boardwalk is built using a modular construction method that uses diamond pier foundations. This approach reduces the need for large-scale excavation, minimizing disruption to the delicate ecosystem. As a result, visitors can navigate the area without harming the environment surrounding them.

Visitor Experience

Along the boardwalk, shaded arbours offer spots for visitors to relax and take in the scenery. These features create opportunities for interaction with the local biodiversity, helping people connect with nature on a deeper level. Informational signs placed within these arbours provide insights about the wetland's plants and animals, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit.

Observation Tower

The observation tower extends from the boardwalk, making it easier for all visitors, including those with disabilities, to access its viewing platform. The ramp that leads up to the observation area provides an engaging journey for visitors as they move upward. This thoughtful design offers varying viewpoints of the wetland, fostering a greater appreciation for the natural surroundings.

Architectural Details

One important detail of the tower is its spiraling ramp, which gradually leads to a higher observation point. The ramp is supported by pairs of steel columns that elegantly arch before meeting the ground. This design choice gives the tower a light appearance. The surrounding light translucent screen, made of perforated metal, creates an interesting play of light and shadow. As the sun moves, different patterns emerge, reflecting the shifting nature of the wetland environment.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
