The Spirala Community Centre is an architectural project designed to serve as a multifunctional facility for the local community in Coimbra, Portugal. The design integrates sustainability and community engagement into its core, utilizing eco-friendly materials and innovative structural systems. The spiraled architectural form is not only visually compelling but also functional, allowing for various activities within its adaptable spaces.

The community centre represents a response to contemporary social needs, providing a venue for educational workshops, recreation, and communal gatherings. The organic shape of the building fosters a sense of inclusivity, drawing people into its central spaces while promoting interaction among users. The project’s vision is rooted in enhancing community identity and resilience, making it a vital part of urban life in Coimbra.

Sustainable Material Use and Innovative Structural System

One of the key differentiators of the Spirala Community Centre is its emphasis on sustainable material use. Bamboo is employed as the primary structural element due to its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio and rapid replenishment cycle. This choice reflects a commitment to reducing the ecological footprint of the project. The incorporation of natural fiber panels and recycled materials enhances thermal insulation while supporting the project's overall sustainability goals.

The structural system features composite arches and reciprocal spars that provide stability and allow for expansive internal spaces without compromising safety. The use of fenestration is also noteworthy, as strategically placed windows enhance natural light penetration, contributing to energy efficiency and creating a pleasant atmosphere for users.

Functional Layout and Versatility

The layout of the Spirala Community Centre is designed for versatility, facilitating a range of activities under one roof. The open-plan design allows for fluid movement between spaces, encouraging spontaneous interactions among visitors. The central dome acts as the heart of the facility, designated for larger gatherings and workshops, while smaller breakout areas are designed for focused activities.

In addition to supporting communal functions, the building is designed with disaster resilience in mind, equipped to serve as a refuge during emergencies. This aspect enhances the facility's value to the community, ensuring that it meets not only daily needs but also provides security in times of crisis.

In summary, the Spirala Community Centre stands out for its integration of sustainable materials, innovative structural approaches, and versatile functional spaces. Its design reflects a commitment to community engagement and resilience, making it a significant addition to the fabric of Coimbra. `
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
