Dancing Threads is a design that brings together movement and connection, inspired by the Möbius strip. Located in the Latvian landscape, it represents the journey of marriage and reflects the complexity of personal stories and interactions with the environment. The design connects people with nature, inviting visitors to engage with both the architecture and the surrounding scenery.

Conceptual Framework

The form features a tower that coils around itself, symbolizing balance and fluidity. A central support, wrapped in a steel truss, gives structural strength while allowing the tower to maintain a light footprint on the land. This creates the feeling that the structure is floating above the ground, providing a sense of elevation and perspective as visitors move upward.

Structural Elements

A spiral staircase plays an important role in the design, serving as a path for visitors to ascend. It encourages interaction with the environment. The first landing provides views of the immediate area, while the upper landing reveals expansive sights of the Vidzeme bioreserve. An integrated stairlift ensures that everyone can access the spaces, offering an option beyond traditional elevators.

Pavilion Design

At the top, an enclosed pavilion features timber-framed glazing and a sloping roof. This area is intended for year-round use and functions as a place where visitors can observe and reflect on the landscape. The pavilion includes perforated wood cladding that references local cultural symbols and traditional weaving patterns, celebrating the agricultural heritage of Latvia.

Landscape Integration

Visitors approach the tower via a winding boardwalk that curves toward the entrance, echoing the shape of the structure. This path encourages exploration of different perspectives and transitions between elevations. The boardwalk is surrounded by uniquely shaped drumlins, which integrate into the local landscape, softened by native grasses and wildflowers.

The top of the tower offers a view that highlights the surrounding landscape while emphasizing the connection between the built environment and nature, capturing the essence of the journey in the design.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
