5 key facts about this project
The Nordic 360° Norrænu Viewing Deck is designed to immerse visitors in the stunning volcanic landscape of Iceland. Set among notable natural features like Hverfjall Volcano, Myvatn Lake, and surrounding black lava fields, the structure aims to balance conservation with visitor experience. The main design concept involves a spiral ramp that leads to an elevated platform, allowing for an engaging view of the Aurora Borealis and other natural phenomena.
Conceptual Framework
The design focuses on volumetric progression, providing a journey for visitors as they move up the spiral ramp. As they ascend, the surrounding landscape gradually comes into view, enriching the experience. The architecture pays close attention to the local geology and ecology, informed by the area's annual solar patterns and natural features, which helps create a strong connection with the site.
Spatial Organization
The layout includes several distinct areas, such as a café, visitor gallery, and play zone. Each space is purposely designed to encourage interaction with the landscape, allowing visitors to experience the environment in different ways. The café and gallery work as transitional zones, providing necessary amenities while keeping a strong link to nature. The play area caters to families, making the setting welcoming for all, without losing sight of the importance of ecological awareness.
Material Selection
Materials are significant in conveying the architectural narrative. Steel is used in the structure to represent the tectonic and seismic activity that characterizes the Icelandic landscape. Meanwhile, cast insitu concrete makes up the internal and external walls, mimicking the layered formations typical of volcanic terrain. This material choice resonates with the local geology and reflects traditional building practices found in Iceland.
The design culminates in an area that provides expansive views, blending the physical structure with the vast natural environment, where visitors can take in the grandeur of the Icelandic landscape.
