## Project Overview: Tower Mound, De Smet, South Dakota

Tower Mound is located near De Smet, South Dakota, and embodies a fusion of landscape architecture and public space through a tiered mound structure. The intent is to create a multifunctional space that encourages outdoor recreation and fosters community interaction while honoring the local ecological and cultural context.

### Spatial Strategy and Cultural Integration

The design features a terraced, spiral form reminiscent of ancient earthworks, connecting visitors to the historical narratives of the region. This gradual ascent, complemented by wide steps, enhances accessibility for individuals of all ages and abilities. The mound’s contours reflect the surrounding landscape, allowing for panoramic views that foster a connection to the natural environment. Additionally, the project acknowledges indigenous heritage, reinforcing cultural appreciation and discovery within its framework.

### Material Selection and Environmental Considerations

The project employs sustainable material choices that maintain the integrity of the landscape. Recycled concrete, bricks, and glass blocks form the core of the mound, while locally-sourced stone enhances both structural stability and aesthetic appeal. A variety of native grasses will cover the mound, supporting erosion control and promoting local biodiversity. Decorative metal elements will be integrated mainly around viewing platforms to enhance the visual experience without detracting from the natural scenery. Careful site placement minimizes disruption to local ecosystems and enhances educational opportunities regarding local flora and fauna. Access pathways are designed to be universally accessible, encouraging participation from the wider community while enhancing mobility for all visitors.
