The Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop is located near Hverfjall in Iceland, designed to provide comfort and warmth for visitors in a challenging climate. It serves as a welcoming space for tourists exploring the natural landscape. The building's design concept centers around the use of spherical shapes that allow for maximum interior space while effectively minimizing heat loss, making it both functional and visually appealing.

Design Concept

The building features spherical forms that enhance energy efficiency and create inviting spaces. By focusing on thermal performance, the design ensures that visitors can experience the beauty of nature while enjoying a comfortable environment. This thoughtful approach reflects an understanding of both the local climate and the needs of those who come to admire it.

Materials and Thermal Performance

Materials chosen for the construction include vacuum glazing and sandwich panels. The vacuum glazing offers a heat loss coefficient of 0.7 W/m.K, which helps maintain a stable indoor temperature while allowing natural light to enter. The sandwich panels provide robust insulation with a heat loss coefficient of 6.0 W/m.K, comprising stainless steel and mineral wool to withstand harsh weather. This careful selection of materials contributes significantly to the building's overall performance.

Spatial Organization

The layout is designed for ease of movement and accessibility, incorporating a coffee shop, exhibition zone, toilets, a visitor center, and office spaces. Each area is strategically placed to enhance the visitor experience. Large glass panels connect the indoor spaces with the surrounding landscape, drawing the outside in and allowing visitors to engage with nature directly.

Stunning Views

Interior spaces are characterized by expansive views of the Icelandic landscape, which enhance the experience of all who visit. This design feature creates a sense of immersion in the natural setting, reminding visitors of the beauty that lies just beyond the walls. Such thoughtful details help establish the coffee shop as a place of respite and reflection in an extraordinary environment.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
