The Nordic Gates is located in the volcanic landscape of Northern Iceland, close to Lake Mývatn. Designed as an observation tower, the building reflects a concept focused on the relationship between land, water, and sky. With its arched form, the structure creates a connection with the natural environment, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the surrounding scenery while enjoying views from within.

Architecture Concept

The building is designed as a circular, three-story structure with large windows that enhance visibility and bring in natural light. The extensive glazing not only brightens the interior but also strengthens the bond between the occupants and the landscape outside. The architectural design encourages exploration and interaction with nature, guiding visitors through a captivating visual experience.

Sustainable Features

Sustainability plays a vital role in the design. The roof includes solar panels that generate renewable energy. Additionally, the curved design allows for rainwater to be harvested and directed to grass planting around the building, which helps purify the water. These features aim to reduce the ecological impact of the structure and support the local environment.

Visitor Circulation

Access for visitors is carefully organized. Specific gates manage entry to the nearby pools, ensuring smooth movement and safety for guests and staff. Visitors must pass through the main reception area, which establishes a structured entry point and encourages a connection to the architecture and its surroundings.

Interior Experience

The interior layout is thoughtfully arranged. The first floor features an entrance lobby, while the self-served cafeteria occupies the second floor. The observation area is located on the third floor, providing different levels of access to the views outside. This arrangement enriches the visitor experience, allowing for engagement with both the architecture and the landscape at varying heights.

The design includes wildflower gardens that enhance biodiversity and blend with the local environment. Gentle pathways encourage visitors to wander and appreciate the landscape while remaining connected to the story of The Nordic Gates. Each element, from the structure to the gardens, works together to create a thoughtful experience rooted in nature.
