The 18N Micro Home is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, serving as a practical solution for a couple of junior accountants. This design focuses on creating a functional living space that accommodates work and leisure within a limited area. The project emphasizes efficiency, flexibility, and sustainable practices, showcasing a modern approach to compact housing.

Geometric Form and Spatial Efficiency

The main design feature is a lozenge-shaped module. This unique shape allows for maximum use of floor space while keeping a simple aesthetic. It stands in contrast to traditional square designs, providing better natural light and airflow. The two-story layout offers a clear distinction between living areas and workspaces. The ground floor includes a small kitchen, a living room that can double as a temporary bedroom, and a compact washroom. Upstairs, a versatile area can be adapted for sleeping or working.

Innovative Folding System

An innovative folding mechanism defines the second floor. This feature allows for a sloped wall that increases functional space without expanding the overall size of the home. The sloped wall adds visual interest and serves as an efficient storage solution. Every inch of space is utilized effectively, making the home not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing.

Sustainable Design Practices

Sustainability plays a significant role in the design of the 18N Micro Home. Solar panels on the southeast section of the roof are intended to provide half of the building's electricity needs. Water management is integrated into the design, with a cistern that collects rainwater and wastewater from the kitchen. This system supports irrigation for landscaping and encourages recycling, demonstrating responsible resource management.

Material Choices

The material selection includes local maple plywood and dark exterior cladding. These choices are both durable and contemporary, fitting the home’s overall look while ensuring it can withstand weather conditions. Energy-efficient LED lighting further enhances functionality, reducing energy use and supporting an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Access to the second floor is provided by a retractable ladder. This clever design element maximizes space on the ground level while offering a practical way to reach the upper floor, embodying the principles of efficiency and convenience in compact living.
