Slanted Concrete Walls Framing a Reflective Water Altar in a Serene Columbarium Setting

Project in-detail

High slanted concrete walls envelop a tranquil water altar, creating a reflective sanctuary within a columbarium designed for contemplation and remembrance.
5 key facts about this project
01
High slanted walls create dynamic play between light and shadow throughout the day.
02
The central water altar enhances the atmosphere with its reflective surface, symbolizing life.
03
A "forest of light" surrounds the columbarium, softening the harshness typical of cemetery settings.
04
Concrete construction provides longevity while integrating harmoniously with the natural environment.
05
The design prioritizes intimate reflection spaces, inviting personal connection to memory and loss.

The design is located within a cemetery, aiming to create a reflective space that connects with themes of life and death. Inspired by the poem "Every Day" by Juris Kronbergs, it emphasizes the importance of light and nature in the experience of remembrance. The arrangement of the elements encourages visitors to engage thoughtfully with the surroundings and the deeper meanings of existence.

High Slanted Walls

Two high slanted walls are central to the design, dividing the rectangular area into distinct sections. They represent the paths of life and death, challenging traditional ideas of movement and perspective. The unique angles invite visitors to explore their emotions and experiences as they move through the space. This approach adds a visual depth, drawing people in and encouraging reflection.

Water Altar

The water altar is a key feature, intentionally placed to prompt pausing and contemplation. Acting as a focal point, it connects visitors to the themes of memory and introspection. The presence of water symbolizes life and renewal, providing a sensory experience that enhances the overall atmosphere. This element fosters a sense of connection to the cycles of existence, making it a significant part of the design.

Forest of Light

Surrounding the columbarium, the "forest of light" creates a peaceful ambiance. It allows light and shade to interact in a way that feels calming and serene. The soft illumination that filters through creates a tranquil environment, contrasting with more typical cemetery settings. This feature invites visitors to spend time in quiet contemplation, deepening their understanding of the space.

Material Choices

Concrete is used for the construction of the high slanted walls and columbarium, contributing both strength and permanence to the design. This material fits the narrative that connects the natural elements with the built environment. Water serves an important role in the altar, reflecting the light and changing throughout the day. It adds to the emotional qualities of the site, inviting people to connect with their thoughts and feelings.

At the center, the water altar catches the eye, its surface glimmering as light plays across it. This simple detail creates a link between those who visit and those who are remembered, inspiring a moment of quiet reflection in a space dedicated to remembrance.
