A skylight illuminates a temple enveloped in cross-laminated timber while a funnel guides visitors through a focused journey of contemplation and mindfulness.
5 key facts about this project
01
The temple features a rotating skylight that dynamically changes lighting throughout the day.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels form both the structure and the exterior, enhancing sustainability.
03
The funnel acts as a compressed transition space, promoting self-awareness and focus.
04
Geometric forms reflect traditional Hindu architecture, symbolizing a connection between worlds.
05
Triple-glazed windows maximize natural light while maintaining energy efficiency.

The setting in the Moses valley is designed as a place for quiet reflection and connection with nature. Its main focus is to encourage mindfulness and self-awareness, drawing from the principles of samadhi, a state where the mind is free and at peace. The design includes two distinct yet related units: the temple and the funnel. Together, they create a space that invites contemplation and encourages a deeper understanding of one's surroundings.

Temple Design

The temple is carefully oriented to capture views of the southwestern landscape and to allow ample natural light inside. Its geometric shapes—primarily a square and a circle—reflect traditional Hindu architecture, representing the larger universe and the individual spirit. This layout encourages visitors to engage with their inner selves while remaining aware of the beauty of nature around them.

Funnel Transition

The funnel serves as a key transition area that links the outside world to the calming interior of the temple. This space is designed with a narrowed approach, guiding individuals into a more focused mindset. By directing movement in such a manner, the funnel enhances the experience of self-discovery, helping visitors shift into a state conducive to meditation and thoughtful reflection.

Material Considerations

Construction relies on cross-laminated timber panels, which make up both the structure and the outer shell. This choice supports sustainability and allows for large open spaces within the design. Triple-glazed windows are included to provide excellent insulation while admitting light, and expanded polystyrene insulation adds further thermal efficiency. Galvanized steel anchor plates create strong connections among structural components, ensuring stability and safety throughout.

Light and Atmosphere

A prominent feature of the temple is the skylight, which brings changing natural light into the space as the day progresses. This addition not only influences the atmosphere but also creates an important link between the interior and the sky above. The rotating skylight maximizes the effects of sunlight, allowing for a rich interplay of light and shadow that invites deeper contemplation and enhances the overall contemplative experience.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
