05
Storage for 272 liters of fresh water supports self-sufficiency.

DREAM COFFEE is located in Northern Europe and reflects the region's cultural and environmental challenges. The project focuses on creating a compact coffee service trailer designed to operate effectively in a cold climate that has long, dark winters. It combines sustainability and functionality, providing a mobile solution for coffee lovers throughout the year.

Structural Design
The trailer features a primary box framing system that supports rafters and studs. This structure ensures strength while maintaining flexibility in the layout. The design allows for daisy chaining, enabling multiple trailers to connect. This reduces the number of transport vehicles needed, which helps to lower carbon emissions related to logistics.

Insulation and Material Use
One of the key design elements is the thick insulation made from sheep wool. This material enhances the trailer's ability to retain heat in colder weather and protects against moisture, pests, and fire. Choosing sheep wool also reflects a commitment to sustainability by using a local resource, demonstrating environmental responsibility.

Functional Layout
Inside the trailer, the layout is carefully designed to improve the efficiency of coffee preparation. It includes specific areas for coffee and espresso grinders, a coffee brewer, and a work surface. A Dutch door serves as a service counter to facilitate customer interaction, while skylights bring in natural light. This arrangement supports a smooth workflow and creates a welcoming environment for patrons.

Storage Capacity
DREAM COFFEE can hold up to 272 liters of fresh water and 135 pounds of coffee. This generous storage capacity allows the trailer to operate independently for longer periods, reducing the need for frequent restocking trips. This feature further lessens the overall carbon footprint while maintaining a compact and manageable design.

The design is marked by clean lines and practical features, creating a functional yet aesthetic experience both inside and outside the trailer.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
