The Sensory Co-living Community aims to create a living environment that balances comfort and spiritual well-being. Located in a setting that encourages community interaction, the design integrates the five human senses—touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste—into everyday life. This thoughtful approach ensures that spaces accommodate individual needs while promoting a shared identity among the residents.

Concept and Spatial Organization

The design features five distinct masses, each with five vertices. This arrangement supports both functional and aesthetic goals, allowing natural light and airflow to circulate effectively. The configuration separates private living areas, while also encouraging social engagement in communal spaces. Each mass is designed to create a harmonious flow that connects spaces, enabling residents to move freely and interact with one another.

Cultural Integration and Landscaping

Landscaping draws inspiration from Italian culture, known for its focus on social interactions. The outdoor areas are carefully designed to be welcoming, with pathways and gardens that invite residents to gather and connect. This attention to outdoor space not only enhances the overall appeal but also plays an important role in building relationships among the community members.

Sensory Engagement and User Experience

The concept of engaging the senses is woven into both the interior and exterior environments. Open spaces and sensory gardens encourage residents to interact with their surroundings in various ways. This focus on user experience guides inhabitants through an environment that stimulates their senses. It transforms everyday living into an enriching experience.

The design achieves a careful balance between communal dynamics and personal space. While each resident can maintain their individual identity, there is a strong sense of community throughout the development. The distribution and arrangement of spaces create an environment that supports comfort and accessibility, making daily interactions more meaningful and enjoyable. Thoughtfully designed details contribute to a living space that fosters connection and enriches the everyday experience of its residents.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
