### Project Overview
Sense House ATX is situated in Austin, Texas, within proximity to Lady Bird Lake, and aims to repurpose a former institutional building into a multi-sensory living community designed primarily for seniors. The project reflects an intent to enhance the quality of life for its residents by prioritizing wellness, connectivity, and intergenerational interaction. This initiative employs innovative engineering solutions and sustainable practices while responding to the unique historical context of the existing structure.

### Adaptive Re-Use and Community Engagement
The design adopts an adaptive re-use strategy that thoughtfully transforms the 1970s building, maintaining its historical character while aligning with contemporary living standards. This design approach creates a dialogue between the old and new, effectively integrating the facility into the existing community fabric. The layout emphasizes communal and private spaces, promoting social interactions and activities. Features such as the herb garden and sensory trail are designed to enhance both personal and collective well-being while fostering a sense of belonging among residents and the surrounding community.

### Sustainable Materiality and Sensory Experience
Material selection for Sense House ATX focuses on sustainability and sensory engagement. Recycled plastics and woods are utilized for furniture and finishes, while terracotta tiles enrich communal areas like the rain room. Strategic use of glass enhances natural light and transparency throughout the building, and natural stone is incorporated to provide grounding and tactile comfort. The interiors prioritize tactility, with textures intentionally chosen to support cognitive and emotional well-being. Unique elements such as the sensory trail and herb bar facilitate resident interaction while being integral to therapeutic horticultural practices. Public spaces, including art galleries and lounges, promote recreational and therapeutic engagement, reinforcing a holistic approach to senior living.
