The Nomadic Self-sustaining Living Module (SLIM) is an innovative solution located in Salda, Argentina. Designed for digital nomads, it aims to provide a flexible and mobile living experience. The overall concept focuses on adaptability, allowing individuals to transport their home effortlessly and set it up in different environments while retaining a sense of comfort.

Conceptual Framework

At the core of SLIM's design is a modular structure that emphasizes mobility and practical use of space. The home is delivered in a container, which can be transported by truck or helicopter depending on accessibility to the site. This transportable nature allows users to establish their living space in a variety of locations. Inside, the configuration combines sleeping, dining, working, and living areas, ensuring efficient use of every square foot.

Material Selection

The structure makes use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) in its assembly. This material is lighter and contributes to the efficiency of the module. Additionally, using FRP helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions during production, aligning with the goals of those who prioritize sustainability in their living choices.

Energy and Water Management

SLIM incorporates roof panels that collect solar energy, providing a renewable power source. A micro-grid system ensures that energy is managed effectively throughout the home. On the water side, potable water tanks and a rainwater collection system enhance the project’s sustainability. The design also includes a greywater collection system to support irrigation for vegetable gardens, demonstrating a commitment to ecological responsibility.

User Interface and Control Systems

The interior features a central control system managed through a touch screen interface. This setup allows residents to oversee lighting, heating, cooling, and water systems easily. This simple yet effective technology plays a significant role in enhancing the user experience by allowing for efficient daily management.

SLIM harmonizes practical design elements with a clean aesthetic, resulting in a space that supports a lifestyle of mobility while addressing essential needs.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
