The design focuses on a movie pavilion in Iceland, a country known for its remarkable landscapes shaped by both ice and fire. The pavilion serves as a space for film screenings and cultural events, reflecting the unique characteristics of its surroundings. The overall design concept highlights the contrast between different forms, showcasing a stable base paired with a sloped pavilion mass that reflects the geological features of the region.

Design Approach

The architectural form consists of two main masses: one large and functional, designed to host various activities, and a smaller, informal mass that encourages social exchanges. This arrangement mirrors the Icelandic landscape, where stability and movement coexist, capturing the attention of visitors and inviting them to explore.

Sustainability and Environment

Sustainability holds a vital place in the design. The building's small footprint minimizes its environmental impact, consistent with modern approaches to eco-friendly architecture. An inviting front plaza enhances this commitment by welcoming the public while respecting the surrounding natural environment, promoting community involvement.

Lobby and Community Space

The pavilion includes a well-thought-out lobby featuring a central tree replica that symbolizes Icelandic traditions. This element enhances the space, offering a location for informal gatherings. The lobby's design encourages openness, with large windows that provide views of the scenic landscape, effectively bridging the space between the interior and the outdoors.

Seasonal Landscaping

The landscape surrounding the pavilion is designed to reflect Iceland's changing seasons. This seasonal approach enriches the visual experience, offering vibrant autumn colors, blooming summer flowers, and serene winter vistas. The design fosters a connection between the built environment and nature, allowing visitors to engage with the landscape as it evolves throughout the year.

Acoustic considerations play a key role in ensuring a comfortable environment for visitors. The design includes elements that manage sound within the pavilion, creating a peaceful atmosphere for film experiences. Together, these features contribute to an engaging space that aligns with the Icelandic commitment to valuing and protecting the environment.
