Sculptural Roof Canopy With Colored Concrete Emphasizing Wellness Retreat Design

Project in-detail

The folded geometry of the sculptural roof canopy, crafted from colored concrete, complements a zen-style garden, creating a tranquil setting for a yoga retreat that fosters connection with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Sculptural roof geometry maximizes natural light and ventilation.
02
Rainwater collection system integrated within the roof design.
03
Colored concrete harmonizes with the natural landscape.
04
Operable glazing connects the yoga space to the zen garden.
05
Stepping stones guide movement between the yoga area and garden.

Abrigo de Jardim is located in the Oleiros valley, an area known for its varied landscape. The structure serves as a retreat for yoga, focusing on a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments. The design aims to create an easy flow that allows visitors to feel at one with nature.

Architectural Concept

The design emphasizes the connection between inside and outside, using simple shading structures to create comfortable outdoor spaces. This design choice blurs the lines between the interior and exterior, promoting a sense of closeness and openness. Visitors are encouraged to interact directly with the natural surroundings, which enhances their overall experience.

Sculptural Roof Canopy

A notable aspect of Abrigo de Jardim is the roof canopy, which features uneven, folded shapes. This unique form plays an important role by bringing in natural light and improving ventilation, while also aiding in the collection of rainwater. The changing heights of the roof echo the landscape's contours, making a visual connection between the structure and its environment.

Zen-Style Garden Integration

The design includes a zen-style garden that sits beneath the sculptural roof, reinforcing the idea of blending indoor and outdoor spaces. An operable glazing system allows the yoga area to open directly to the garden, creating a gentle transition between the two. This thoughtful connection to nature encourages peace and reflection, enhancing the quality of the retreat.

Material and Sustainability Considerations

Materials are carefully chosen to support the overall design. Colored concrete, mixed with brown pigments, connects the structure to the surrounding environment. The project also uses thin-film solar panels on a glass surface, focusing on energy efficiency. A rainwater collection system works in coordination with the roof's design, capturing stormwater and recycling it for use throughout the facility.

This intentional combination of roof design, garden integration, and material choice fosters tranquil spaces that invite users to relax and connect with nature.
