05
The design integrates seamlessly into the natural landscape, reflecting the local topography.

The Abri Velo project is an architectural design that aims to support cyclists along the Eurovelo 6 route, a prominent cycling path traversing various landscapes in Europe. This project addresses the need for functional bicycle shelters that are adaptable, environmentally conscious, and visually integrated into the natural surroundings. The design emphasizes a modular system, enabling easy transport and installation while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint.

The Abri Velo shelters serve multiple functions, including secure bicycle storage, resting areas, and social gathering spaces for cyclists. Each module is designed to accommodate different activities, allowing users to choose configurations that suit their needs. The interiors are designed for comfort, featuring communal spaces, kitchens, and sleeping arrangements.

One of the defining aspects of this project is its modular configuration, allowing each unit to be adjusted based on the specific terrain where it is placed. This flexibility enables the design to maintain its functionality while adapting to various landscapes along the cycling route. Furthermore, the structure is designed with a contemporary aesthetic that draws inspiration from the flowing forms of the river, promoting a seamless connection between the built environment and nature.

The materiality of the Abri Velo is also noteworthy. Constructed using fiber-reinforced concrete panels, laminated wood, and reinforced glass, the choice of materials enhances durability while providing a modern appearance. The textured surfaces of the concrete panels reflect natural patterns, while the warm tones of laminated wood contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. Large windows facilitate natural light and provide views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the user experience.

The design also emphasizes sustainability through its lightweight construction and eco-friendly materials, reducing the overall environmental impact. By incorporating these design elements, the Abri Velo project demonstrates a strong commitment to creating a cyclist-friendly environment that respects and complements its natural setting.

For those interested in exploring the intricacies of the Abri Velo project, it is advisable to review the architectural plans, sections, and designs to gain a comprehensive understanding of its unique elements and functional outcomes.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
