Schist Volumes Embracing Nature in a Mountain Retreat

Project in-detail

Cantilevered schist volumes create a balanced connection with the Serra de Estrela mountains, offering a tranquil retreat for yoga and meditation that emphasizes sustainability and natural ventilation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cantilevered southwest corner enhances views and engagement with the landscape.
02
Central outdoor gathering space promotes social interaction and connection to nature.
03
Schist walls provide thermal mass, aiding in energy efficiency throughout the seasons.
04
Dual volumes facilitate distinct functions for yoga and meditation while maintaining cohesion.
05
Operable windows ensure natural ventilation and comfort year-round.

The Yoga House is located in the scenic area of the Serra de Estrela mountains and serves as a retreat for yoga and meditation practices. The design is centered on creating a harmonious connection with the surrounding environment, featuring two distinct volumes that house various functions. Visitors can transition easily between indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering a sense of calm and connection to nature.

Design Concept

The structure consists of two leaning volumes. One volume is dedicated to a yoga studio that includes an additional space for meditation on the upper floor. The other volume contains a café and restrooms. This configuration encourages movement and interaction among visitors while highlighting the balance that is fundamental to yoga. A central outdoor area acts as a gathering point, inviting users to engage with the natural landscape and enhancing the experience.

Materiality

Schist serves as the main material for the building. This local metamorphic rock is valued for its thermal mass, which helps regulate temperature by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. By incorporating locally sourced materials, the design connects to the regional character while minimizing environmental impact, promoting sustainability.

Ventilation and Environmental Integration

Natural ventilation plays a key role in the building’s design. Operable windows allow cool breezes to flow in from the northwest while warmer air can escape through the upper level. This arrangement improves comfort and encourages airflow throughout the space. The central outdoor area also aids in air circulation, creating a pleasant atmosphere suitable for relaxation and meditation.

The careful planning of dual volumes and an accessible roof creates opportunities for engaging with the surroundings. The design features at the cantilevered southwest corner add a sense of lightness, contrasting with the strong presence of the schist walls. This combination of sturdy materials and thoughtful design details contributes to the overall effectiveness of the Yoga House as a peaceful retreat.
