5 key facts about this project
Vale de Moses Yoga House is located in the peaceful landscape of north-central Portugal, surrounded by chestnut trees and rolling hills. Designed as a retreat for yoga and meditation, it highlights the importance of nature while focusing on the well-being of its users. The architecture reflects traditional Portuguese countryside styles and seeks to create a calming atmosphere that supports thoughtful practices.
Design Concept
The design emphasizes harmony with the natural landscape. Buildings are positioned to take advantage of views to the south-west, offering a pleasing perspective of the valley and creek. The layout includes a Yoga House, Water Tower, Greenhouse, and Meditation Cabin. Each structure serves a purpose and enhances the experience of being in nature. The design enables smooth transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing people to fully engage with their surroundings.
Materiality
The northeast facade features schist stone, a choice that connects the building to local traditions. This material helps keep the indoor environment comfortable during colder months by reducing heat loss. The south-west facade includes large sliding glass windows and wooden elements. This combination allows natural light to flood the interior and creates an open, welcoming space that helps bring the outside in.
Sustainability
Sustainability plays a significant role in how the buildings operate. The Water Tower captures and stores rainwater, which is then used throughout the site. There is a biofilter system that treats wastewater, allowing for its reuse in irrigation for gardens and the greenhouse. This careful planning ensures that the retreat works in harmony with nature while limiting environmental impact.
Outdoor Integration
Outdoor areas are essential to the design of Vale de Moses Yoga House. Zen gardens and spaces for physical activities and contemplation are included to enhance user experience. The entrance garden welcomes visitors and fosters a sense of calm as they enter the retreat. The thoughtful landscaping promotes mindfulness and encourages a deeper connection to the natural world surrounding the site.
Large windows in the Yoga House open up to stunning views, creating a connection between the interior and the landscape. This visual relationship enhances the experience of those who come to practice, offering a tranquil setting that encourages reflection and inner peace.
