5 key facts about this project
01
The building’s roof design mimics the forms of volcanic landforms.
02
Axial skylights enhance natural light and connect indoor spaces to the outdoors.
03
Laminated glazing is used to improve thermal efficiency during varied weather.
04
Concrete flooring is chosen for durability and ease of maintenance in high-traffic areas.
05
Visitor areas are strategically oriented to maximize views of the surrounding volcano.

The Hverfjall Visitor Center and Café is located in a volcanic landscape and aims to enhance visitors' understanding of the unique geological features around it. This building provides essential services and information for tourists while encouraging them to connect with nature. The design concept draws inspiration from the natural forces that shaped the environment, reflected in both the building's form and layout.

Design Concept

The design emphasizes exploration and discovery, using a shape that resembles geological formations. The roof is designed to appear split and uneven, echoing the land that was formed by past volcanic events. The skylight runs along the axis between the building's north and south sides, allowing natural light to fill the spaces while linking occupants with the sky, reinforcing the connection to the geology of the site.

Materiality

Materials chosen for the project are selected for their durability and effectiveness in a challenging environment. The building includes insulating laminated glazing and extruded aluminum components, which improve energy efficiency and resilience. Rigid foam insulation also plays a role in making the structure energy efficient, supporting environmentally conscious construction choices while maintaining a cohesive look.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the visitor center guides people through various experiences. Entering the building, guests find a fireplace that serves as a warm focal point in the café area. Polished concrete flooring extends throughout the space, providing a practical surface that holds up well to heavy foot traffic. Glue laminated timber beams and wood paneling enhance the welcoming feel of the interior, creating a balance with the strong exterior.

Visual Connections

Angled glass panels throughout the structure provide clear views of the nearby volcano, encouraging visitors to engage with the scenery. This design choice promotes a calm environment where people can take a moment to appreciate the landscape. Practical areas such as workstations and restrooms are integrated smoothly into the layout, meeting visitors' needs without disrupting the overall design.

The café area, featuring a central fireplace, invites people to gather and relax while enjoying views that showcase the rugged beauty of the surroundings. Through thoughtful design details, the Hverfjall Visitor Center and Café balances practical function with a deep connection to nature, enhancing the experience for all who visit.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
