Strategically located at a high elevation to maximize panoramic views of Kāpiti Ranges.

"REVOLVER: A Romantic Cabin for Two" is an architectural project located on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand. This cabin offers a contemporary reflection on the traditional concept of a retreat designed for couples. The project integrates modern design principles with cultural references, aiming to foster connection and interaction within a serene natural environment.

The cabin encompasses a circular layout that encourages both communal engagement and individual contemplation. By employing a range of materials such as wood, plywood, waterproof paper, solar panels, and stone, the design not only prioritizes durability and aesthetics but also emphasizes sustainability. The cabin's unique revolving structure allows for adaptable living spaces, reinforcing the idea of evolving dynamics within relationships.

Spatial Arrangement and Features

The design includes various functional zones, with the centerpiece being a customized tub sanctuary. This area serves as a focal point, allowing couples to enjoy intimate moments while surrounded by nature. The radial design enhances the spatial experience, offering flexibility for privacy or socialization as desired. The layout also incorporates sliding walls, which permit the adjustment of room orientations, further enhancing the user experience.

The strategic placement of the cabin at a high elevation within the Kāpiti Ranges maximizes stunning views and immersion in the surrounding landscape. This choice accentuates the project’s intent to connect occupants with nature, creating a comforting retreat away from urban life. The surrounding environment informs the material choices made for the construction, as natural elements resonate throughout the cabin’s design.

Innovative Design Elements

A defining characteristic of "REVOLVER" is its ability to transform. The rotating sections allow occupants to customize their experience on demand, highlighting the dynamic relationship between space and user interaction. This innovative approach distinguishes the project from conventional static designs found in numerous cabins.

Sustainability is another hallmark of the project. The integration of solar panels and rainwater collection systems ensures minimal environmental impact. The careful selection of materials, such as responsibly sourced wood and energy-efficient components, further supports the ecological ethos of the design.

In summary, the architectural design of “REVOLVER: A Romantic Cabin for Two” represents a thoughtful approach to creating a space that nurtures relationships while respecting the natural surroundings. For those interested in exploring this project further, examining the architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural ideas can provide deeper insights into the design’s functionality and intentions.

Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization.
