At the heart of the design, rotating panels enhance airflow while a biomorphic foundation integrates the cabin into its natural surroundings, creating a sustainable retreat focused on wellness.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rotating wall panels provide flexible airflow and privacy options.
02
The foundation design mimics natural tree structures for ecological integration.
03
Large windows optimize views of the surrounding landscape while inviting natural light.
04
Wood is the primary material, promoting a calming and sustainable atmosphere.
05
A greywater harvesting system manages water use efficiently and sustainably.

The cabin integrates smoothly into the landscape of Portugal, serving as a peaceful retreat that emphasizes the importance of light and nature. Inspired by the caravel from the 15th century, the design connects historical significance with a modern function. This concept aims to create a welcoming space that encourages interaction with the environment, while also focusing on the comfort of its users.

Design Concept

The cabin is designed to take full advantage of natural light. It allows sunlight to enter from various angles, enriching the interior environment. The roof, shaped like the sails of a caravel, adds a unique touch to the overall profile of the structure. By maintaining a sense of privacy while still inviting light in, the design fosters a calm atmosphere ideal for rest and reflection.

Functionality

Key to the cabin’s design are the rotating panels on the side walls. These panels give users control over airflow and can also serve as flexible dividers within the space. This adaptability enhances the functionality of the cabin, allowing users to modify the environment according to their personal preferences. Whether one desires an open setting or a more secluded area, the design accommodates varying user needs.

Material Integration

Wood is the main material chosen for the cabin because of its low environmental impact and comforting qualities. The approach involves standard wood framing and sturdy connections, which streamline the construction process. This choice not only complements the natural landscape but also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, reinforcing the link between the cabin and its surroundings.

Biophilic Strategies

The design incorporates biophilic principles to strengthen the connection to nature. Features of the prospect-refuge theory help provide users with a sense of security while enjoying views of the beautiful landscape. Careful placement of windows enhances sightlines, allowing users to experience the outdoors from within. The foundation mirrors natural tree structures, promoting ecological balance and further connecting the cabin to its environment.

The cabin includes effective greywater and rainwater harvesting systems. These details ensure that water management is sustainable and minimizes the project’s ecological footprint. As light moves through the spaces, it creates a gentle atmosphere that adds to the overall experience, encouraging occupants to appreciate their surroundings at different times of the day.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
