Rope-Weaved Structure Overlooking Wetlands with Precast Concrete Foundations

Project in-detail

Constructed with a rope-woven enclosure and precast concrete, the observation point rises six meters above the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, providing accessible views of the local flamingo habitat while fostering an educational experience about the surrounding ecosystem.
5 key facts about this project
01
The ellipsoidal form of the structure is inspired by the shape of a nest.
02
A circular ramp provides accessible movement for all visitors, enhancing inclusivity.
03
The observation deck is strategically positioned six meters high for optimal wildlife viewing.
04
Locally sourced reed ropes are woven into the design for safety and aesthetic appeal.
05
An outdoor gallery space educates visitors about the wetland ecosystem and its species.

The Perch is located in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi. It serves as an observation point designed to enhance visitors' experience of the surrounding environment. The structure takes the form of an ellipsoid, inspired by the shape of a nest. This design choice helps create an inviting space that encourages exploration of the unique wildlife that inhabits the wetlands, particularly the flamingos.

Design Concept
The layout of The Perch focuses on immersing visitors in the natural landscape. The observation tower stands six meters high, offering panoramic views and enhancing the connection to the wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to engage closely with the environment and learn about the ecosystem, making it both a functional viewing platform and an educational resource.

Accessibility Features
A circular ramp is a key feature of the design, providing easy access for all visitors, including those with mobility concerns. Its gentle slope allows people to reach the viewing deck comfortably. This thoughtful design aspect ensures that everyone can enjoy the experience of observing the wetland’s rich biodiversity.

Material Utilization
In terms of materials, The Perch incorporates precast concrete for its structure and ramp support. This choice minimizes site disruption, allowing for a more efficient construction process. Steel is utilized for the framework, providing strength and stability. Timber is used for the ramp, boardwalk, and benches, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Locally sourced reed-made ropes are woven into the design to join the steel frames and form safety railings, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability and ecological sensitivity.

The thoughtful details of The Perch enable visitors to feel more connected to the wetlands. The interplay of the materials enhances both the structure’s visual appeal and its role within the landscape, inviting people to experience the beauty of nature from a new perspective.
