"Home in the Orchard" is located in Okagyakrom, a village in the Oti region of Ghana. Surrounded by orange and palm trees, the design seeks to create a small, sustainable home that connects the inhabitants to their natural environment. The focus is on multifunctionality and enhancing the outdoor experience while considering the local climate, which features a rainy and dry season.

Design Concept

The layout of the home includes several essential spaces: a multi-purpose living area, kitchen, washroom, bedroom, study area, closet, storage, and an outdoor rooftop sitting area. This arrangement maximizes the use of space while providing the necessary functions for daily life. Each area is designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing for various activities that occupants might engage in throughout the day.

Materials and Construction

Timber sourced from the local area serves as the primary building material. Using local resources not only supports the community but also aligns with the aim of sustainability. By minimizing transportation needs, the design reduces both costs and the environmental impact of construction, making it a responsible choice in terms of resource management.

Sustainable Features

One of the key aspects of the design is its focus on sustainability. The washroom includes a composite toilet system that can break down waste and transform it into fertilizer for the surrounding planting beds. This self-sufficient approach encourages a cycle of waste reuse, benefiting both the home and the orchard. It emphasizes a practical way to live in harmony with nature.

Seamless Outdoor Integration

A rooftop terrace forms an important part of the living space, providing a platform for enjoying views of the orchard. This outdoor area encourages social interaction and relaxation, offering a place to disconnect from daily routines. By incorporating a connection to the landscape, it enhances the overall living experience and fosters a strong relationship between the inhabitants and their environment.
