The Monte D'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located within the scenic Quinta do Monte D'Oiro winery. Designed to fit in with the surrounding vineyards, the space aims to create a shared experience for visitors. The concept is rooted in the act of toasting, symbolizing connection and celebration through the visual representation of two glasses. This idea forms the foundation of the design, providing a meaningful context for the tasting room's purpose.

Architectural Form

The structure takes the shape of two interconnecting glasses, embodying the spirit of celebration associated with wine tasting. By situating the room below the countryside level, the design minimizes its visual footprint. This careful placement allows the building to blend with its surroundings, respecting the landscape while also enhancing the visitor's experience of the vineyard.

Site Integration

Pathways leading to the tasting room are framed by a green wire mesh, allowing the structure to remain unobtrusive in its natural setting. A gabion wall made of stones adds stability and complements the pathways, enhancing both their functionality and appearance. This approach ensures that visitors can move through the space comfortably while maintaining a connection to the beautiful vineyard landscape.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability plays a significant role in the design. The tasting room features large window panes with low-emission filters, optimizing natural light and reducing energy loss. Natural ventilation systems enhance air circulation, while blackout curtains control sunlight exposure inside. A roof garden ensures better insulation and supports local wildlife, reinforcing the commitment to environmental stewardship.

Interior Composition

Inside, the tasting room covers an area of 64.44 square meters and can accommodate up to 31 seats, with a maximum potential of 36. A small kitchen equipped with induction appliances powered by photovoltaic panels adds practical functionality. The space includes eco-friendly furnishings, with oak wood floors treated with beeswax, creating a natural ambiance.

The thoughtful arrangement of space promotes interaction among visitors, elevating the experience of wine tasting. The design reflects an appreciation for both the landscape and the cultural significance of wine, offering a place where people can gather and connect.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
