The design is located in the green Umbrian Valley, an area celebrated for its rolling hills and extensive vineyards. The project aims to create a space that reflects the winemaking process through three main phases: GROWTH, REST, and ENJOYMENT. The architecture connects closely with its surroundings, allowing for an interaction between the built environment and the natural landscape. This connection invites visitors to experience the essence of winemaking in a new way.

Design Concept

The focus on the three phases of winemaking guides the overall design. By extending the vineyards into the site, the structure becomes part of the agricultural landscape. This integration encourages a deeper engagement with nature. Visitors can explore the vineyards while experiencing the architectural spaces, creating a strong bond between nature and the structure.

Spatial Configuration

The layout consists of various spaces designed for both public gatherings and private moments. Terraces provide areas where people can come together or find solitude, offering views of the landscape. This design allows for movement between spaces, blending the enjoyment of the scenery with the activities of winemaking.

Integration of Nature

Pergolas play an important role in the design, providing shade and creating a cozy atmosphere. These structures support vine growth, connecting the building to the surrounding agricultural landscape. The natural elements of the design enrich the environment, allowing visitors to engage with the growing process directly and gain a better understanding of where their wine comes from.

Materiality and Heritage

Roman bricks sourced from the site add historical significance to the project. The careful reuse of these materials preserves a link to the past while promoting sustainable building practices. This choice reinforces the cultural heritage of the region, creating a narrative that connects the area's history with contemporary design.

The architectural approach fosters a rich experience for visitors, allowing them to gather grapes from their own terraces while enjoying the expansive views. This hands-on interaction with the land enhances the enjoyment of wine, highlighting the relationship between the vineyard and the act of savoring fine products grown on that very soil.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
