Rhythmic Ascent Through Cantilevered Terraces in a Natural Landscape

Project in-detail

Cantilevered terraces rise gracefully from a central trunk-like volume, embodying the rhythm of ascent and encouraging user engagement within the natural landscape as an observation tower.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cantilevered design maximizes panoramic views and creates a dynamic exterior profile.
02
Observation terraces vary in scale, providing both communal and private spaces for visitors.
03
The asymmetrical railing design contributes to the rhythmic quality of the façade.
04
The tower's form draws inspiration from a sprouting sapling, enhancing its organic connection to the landscape.
05
Non-linear circulation paths encourage exploration and interaction with the surrounding nature.

Stepping Pace Observation Tower is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and explores the themes of rhythm and movement found in the natural world. The design takes inspiration from the way a horse moves, blending structure with an experience that emphasizes ascent and interaction with the landscape. This tower aims to create a compelling connection between the building and its surroundings, encouraging visitors to navigate and engage with the environment.

Orientation and Circulation

The design emphasizes rhythm as a guiding force for movement throughout the tower. Visitors encounter paths that do not follow a traditional layout, allowing them to ascend in a way that feels both engaging and intuitive. This experience reshapes how they perceive the surrounding nature and invites reflections on their journey to the observation points.

Form and Spatial Organization

The shape of the tower resembles a sprouting sapling, with cantilevered stairwells and terraces that take inspiration from tree branches. This organic layout promotes interaction with the natural environment and creates spaces that cater to various experiences. Each landing offers different levels of openness and privacy, encouraging exploration and discovery as visitors move between them.

Façade and Visual Connection

The façade is a combination of horizontal lines and a prominent vertical element. An elongated diagonal feature enhances the vertical movement through the design, serving as a visual marker for users. The asymmetrical railings add detail to the exterior, reinforcing the rhythm of the overall structure while maintaining a connection to its natural surroundings.

Terraces and User Engagement

The observation terraces are crucial to the experience, offering varying scales and degrees of privacy. These vantage points provide alternative views of the landscape and invite visitors to engage actively with their surroundings. The design includes areas for social interaction along with secluded spots for quiet reflection, catering to the diverse needs of those who visit.

The composition leads to a notable observation lookout on the fifth floor, which features retractable glass walls. This design detail provides unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the feeling of connection between the tower and its environment. The overall experience encourages visitors to appreciate both the architecture and the beauty of the natural world.
