La Comarca is an architectural project located in Old Town Bayamón, Puerto Rico, designed to address the specific needs of the aging population. The project integrates urban housing and community spaces, creating an environment that promotes social interaction and connectivity. Its design redefines elderly living by fostering engagement with diverse generations while offering essential services tailored to senior residents.

The primary function of La Comarca is to provide a supportive living environment for the elderly, facilitating independence while ensuring accessibility and safety. The design incorporates various community amenities, including administrative offices, a cafeteria, communal areas, an infirmary, and communal gardens, which serve as focal points for interaction among residents. The project features both dependent living quarters and independent apartment units, effectively catering to a spectrum of elderly needs.

The architectural layout includes multiple levels thoughtfully arranged to maximize interaction and accessibility. Level one houses essential services, providing immediate access to care and social amenities, while subsequent levels contain living spaces designed to promote independence among residents. The incorporation of shared communal spaces throughout the facility encourages residents to participate in activities, supporting mental well-being and community cohesion.

Unique aspects of La Comarca include its integration of existing structures within the urban fabric. By emphasizing the historical context of the site and utilizing local materials such as brick masonry, concrete, and terracotta blocks, the project honors the architectural heritage of Bayamón. This contextual approach enhances the project’s aesthetic appeal while creating a sense of place, connecting residents to their environment.

The design also showcases sustainability through the integration of green spaces and community gardens, promoting environmental stewardship. These elements not only support ecological goals but also foster community interaction, encouraging residents to engage with nature. The architecture strategically incorporates passive design principles to optimize natural light and ventilation throughout the living areas, thereby enhancing energy efficiency.

La Comarca serves as a model for how architecture can effectively respond to the challenges faced by aging populations. Its thoughtful design and community-oriented approach create opportunities for social engagement while addressing practical housing needs.
