The "Common Galleries" project is situated in the San Lorenzo neighborhood of Rome, known for its historical depth. Once a center for workers, the area is now home to many students attending Sapienza University. The design aims to breathe new life into the neighborhood, particularly its southern border, which faces challenges due to nearby railways and highways. The concept focuses on improving connectivity and creating spaces that encourage social interaction, contributing to a lively urban atmosphere.

Historical Context

The architectural design engages deeply with the historical surroundings, particularly the Ancient Roman Wall. A pedestrian pathway is proposed to highlight this important structure and foster interaction with the local environment. This pathway is intended to enhance the experience of walking, allowing people to partake in various activities while appreciating the history surrounding them.

Urban Intervention

The project tackles issues created by transportation in the area. The design suggests converting a street filled with parked cars into a pedestrian-friendly zone. This change increases safety for those using public transportation, like the streetcar. There is also a plan to cover existing highway structures with greenery, which not only adds visual interest but also aims to improve air quality, showing a commitment to a more sustainable urban environment.

Landmark Focus

Another key element of the design is the Monumentale del Verano Cemetery. Proposed improvements would reshape the area around the cemetery to enhance access and better integrate it with the community. By reconsidering how people enter from the highway, the project aims to make the cemetery a more welcoming part of San Lorenzo, celebrating its cultural and historical significance.

Community Space

The design envisions a reworked Piazza de Verano, crucial for connecting the university with the neighborhood. The plans include reducing traffic in this public space, expanding green areas, and promoting activities that encourage community engagement. This change will help create a central gathering spot where residents and visitors can come together and share experiences.

The "Common Galleries" project addresses the needs of the local community while also acknowledging the historical narrative of San Lorenzo. The design aims to create meaningful interactions among residents and visitors, enriching the urban landscape and the experiences it offers.

Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
