The Yoga House on a Cliff, also known as The Lotus House, is located in Vale de Moses, a tranquil area in central Portugal. It serves as a retreat for individuals seeking connection with nature and personal reflection, specifically catering to yoga practitioners. The design promotes a welcoming atmosphere and integrates smoothly with the surrounding environment.

Design Concept

The concept emphasizes harmony with nature and is organized into three primary areas: an entrance, an open-space practice room (shala), and a connecting area that includes a kitchenette and socializing space. This layout facilitates ease of movement throughout the building, allowing users to transition comfortably between social activities and individual practice.

Materials and Sustainability

The design makes effective use of materials that are locally available. Wood is prominently featured, adding warmth to the interior while being a sustainable choice. Glass is used throughout, maximizing natural light and creating a visual link between inside and outside. The roof is carefully designed to collect rainwater, addressing sustainability needs effectively. Additionally, solar panels are incorporated to support energy production, which further establishes the retreat’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Interior Functionality

Inside the Yoga House, functionality is prioritized to enhance the user experience. The main yoga room is equipped with retractable wood panels that allow users to control light levels according to their preferences. This flexibility helps reduce glare during practice while keeping a connection to the outdoor environment. Storage areas are discreetly hidden behind wooden panels, ensuring the space remains clean and organized.

Design Details

Attention to detail is evident in various design elements. A technical area is decorated with forest wallpaper, which reinforces the retreat’s relationship with the natural surroundings. In addition, a mirror featuring an open lotus flower symbolizes purity and mindfulness in practice. These thoughtful touches enhance the overall atmosphere and support the retreat’s focus on tranquility and self-exploration.
