The Mobile Hospice is a thoughtful design that aims to improve the experience of patients facing terminal illnesses. Situated in an urban area, the concept prioritizes flexibility and accessibility, allowing individuals to engage with their environment. It moves away from traditional hospice settings, which can sometimes feel isolating, and instead fosters a sense of connection and autonomy. This innovative approach seeks to provide not just care, but also a rich set of experiences that enhance quality of life.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the Mobile Hospice is designed to support holistic well-being for its occupants. Spaces are intentionally created for personal reflection, social interaction, and spiritual connection. These areas encourage interaction with nature and among individuals, reinforcing a community feeling. The design promotes various activities that deepen emotional engagement, creating a supportive environment where patients can feel valued and understood.

Key Design Features

Notable elements include a viewing deck with a retractable roof and an outdoor/indoor chapel. These features invite natural light and fresh air, creating a bright and open atmosphere. The gathering areas are strategically placed to enhance interactions among patients, families, and caregivers. This setup fosters the development of support networks, which are vital during difficult times.

Material Approach

Though specific materials are not mentioned, the design suggests a focus on options that enhance emotional comfort and sensory experiences. The overall approach prioritizes creating spaces that resonate with occupants. Every design choice aims to foster a sense of well-being and connection, emphasizing compassion in care and engagement with the surroundings.

The Mobile Hospice creates a welcoming environment where individuals can share memories, reflect on their lives, and enjoy the vibrancy of life around them, promoting meaningful connections in a supportive space.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
